Sri Lanka ratifies ILO convention on violence and harassment at work

Colombo, January 8 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka formally deposited its instrument of ratification of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Convention No. 190 on the elimination of violence and harassment at work this morning at the Labour Ministry auditorium. The event was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe.

The ceremony was attended by the Swiss Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Dr. Siri Walt; Canadian High Commission Representative, Mr. Kiril Iordanov; UN Resident Coordinator, Marc-André Franche; and ILO Country Representative, Ms. Joni Simpson. Senior government officials, including Secretary to the Ministry of Labour S.M. Piyatissa and Commissioner General of Labour Nadeeka Wataliyadda, were also present.

Sri Lanka becomes the second country in South Asia to ratify this landmark Convention, which guarantees the right of everyone to work free from violence and harassment. By depositing the instrument of ratification with the ILO, the country has formally committed to implementing the Convention through legal, policy, and institutional measures.

The move aligns with the National Policy Framework, “A Prosperous Country, a Beautiful Life,” which seeks to strengthen protections against gender-based violence and harassment in workplaces, public transport, and other public spaces.

Ratifying ILO Convention No. 190 highlights Sri Lanka’s commitment to promoting safe, decent, and equitable workplaces while harmonizing national labour laws with international standards.
